My girlfriend waits for her man to return from Kismayu

By Karani Kelvin

My girlfriend is waiting for the return of her man
She tells me: Nothing makes me anxious than
His presence there, and yet, nothing excites me
More than this; that he is there for the country,
You and me. What greater love can there be?

She counts his victories with her feathery fingers
Proudly like a child after learning how to count
She tells me, as we drench her silky sheets with steamy
Sweat: he has been in Afmadow, Bibi and Burgavo
This is his second tour of Kismayu. She stretches

Her hand over my back and digs her nails in as
She tells me, in an inaudible whisper: these
Sessions keep my skin shiny, paints a smile on
My face. They pump the right hormones into
The system and the exercises are good for health
