G

(10.05.2019, For my friend who was contemplating suicide)

No, G,
I cannot promise you that.
In fact, I cannot promise you anything at all!

Will it be easier tomorrow? Will he treat
you any better? Will the business earn
you more? Will you be all smiles?
I don’t know that, G.

Will you be better off on your own?
The birds of the air, the animals and the flowers
Do just fine. We are more precious, no?

The sun rises and sets for all of us
In their magnificence the stars dance for us
The moon, whenever it shows its face,
Guides us all into the mystery of night

So let me tell you this, G.
We are all like soldiers, marching to the end
Sometimes we laugh. Sometimes we cry.
Celebrate the little joys, learn from pain.
As long as we are above this ground.
We still are. We are here. We can dare to dream.

G, don’t do it.
The world will be poorer. Our lives emptier.
Do not deny us the joys of having you around.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 800,000 people commit suicide every year. That comes to about one person every 40 seconds. What are you doing to change this?
